Why Shanghai?

With a population of 16.7 million people, Shanghai is a fascinating mix of East and West. The city of Shanghai is split in two by the Huangpu River. The older town on the west bank is known as Puxi and the brash new development on the east side, Pudong , is the skyscraper-laden new financial and commercial district. Shanghai has one of the richest collections of art deco buildings in the world. The architecture of the city has many international influences. On the one hand, the city has the feel of Paris or Montreal, on the other, the 1930s buildings put you in New York or Chicago. If you are shopping for bargains or looking for the latest designer labels, Shanghai is the place to be. Food is of course everywhere: cheap, tasty and plentiful. The best times to visit Shanghai are spring (April to mid-May) and autumn (late September to mid-November).
